An Eagle Scout's project is a capstone on their scouting journey. Prior to starting their project, the scout will have earned many ranks, serving in multiple patrol and troop leadership roles for months at a time, completing merit badges, and learning various camping and life skills.
The scout demonstrates leadership skills through planning, communicating, and actualizing the project. A district committee reviews and approves plans before any works starts and verifies that a completed project has demonstrated leadership in commmunity service.
The Oakwood Historical Society has been proud to benefit from the projects of many Scouts on their path to the Eagle Rank. Here is a partial listing of projects, mainly from 2009 through the present:
- Dave Long (1980's). Rebuilt the pump house.
- Jonathan Pearson (T101, 2009). Re-leveled and extended brick sidewalk along south side of the house.
- (T101) Painted outside of summer kitchen and pump house
- (T101) Painted Carriage house and garage
- (T101) Built first section of the kitchen garden
- (T293) Removed a huge amount of honeysuckle from the adjacent property, which at the time was a rental property owned by the Historical Society
- (T101) Drainage repaired beside the summer kitchen and along the south side of the main house, including installing drains into the middle of the yard and rebuilding the brick pavers and drain along the summer kitchen.
- (T101) rebuilt and re- graveled the driveway around the house
- (T101) Cleaned the 1920’s basement coal room, scrubbed, sealed, primed, painted. Added metal shelving. All while wearing hazmat type clothing. Installed additional donated metal shelving in the main basement room.
- (T101) Built second section of the kitchen garden, including raised beds, landscape fabric, fencing, chicken wire, and a second gate.
- (T293) Painted the exterior of the summer kitchen.
- (T101) Rebuilt pumphouse. Including raising, removing foundation, digging out tree roots, repaving, rebuilding foundation, and repairing rotted siding.
- (T101) Rebuilt grape trellis, repainted pump house. Trellis used salvaged wood to make it look old.
- (T101) Repainted garden fencing, rebuilt raised beds, laid new landscape fabric
- (T101) Rebuilt handicap ramp
- (T101) Made screens for the transom windows in the house, and for the back window of the garage.
- (T101) Made a dividing wall 1/3 vs 2/3 partition for the garage
- (T293) Built potting table and compost bins
- (T101) Built storage shelves for the summer kitchen. Built 4 stacking benches for the summer kitchen.
- (T293) Stained handicap ramp. Pulled invasive plants in flower beds, raked fall leaves
- (T101) Built third addition to kitchen garden, with gate, 2 raised beds, and landscape fabric in the new area. Painted existing and new fence.
- (T101) Built concrete pad and corral for trash cans, put in paver walkway between garden and summer kitchen
- (T101) Rebuilt cupola on top of summer kitchen. Cupola was removed and re-installed.
- (T320) Removed honeysuckle and other invasive plants, covered area along north fence with cardboard and mulch to prevent regrowth.
